Do you know the "Golden Rule" of closet cleaning? ... they say, if there is something in the closet you have not worn in a long time, then you should to get rid of it ...but considering 2020, can we still hold this true as we move into the new year?! This past year, fashion fell to the wayside for many as we all juggled working from home, school from home, parenting, and overall survival through life changing overnight. As we head into 2021 and light on the horizon it is time to clear some space in our closets for better days ahead. One big lesson from 2020, I'm sure we can all agree on, is to keep things simple - cut the clutter and any unnecessary burdens. As we begin, think mindfulness over purging.
Maintain Timeless Pieces Classic wardrobe pieces that are in good condition, despite not wearing them much in 2020, should remain in your closet. The hope of 2021 & light on the horizon means dressing in more than leggings & sweatshirts.
Look to Invest vs Buy That does not mean, do not make purchases. It simply means, be mindful with the purchases. Retain purchases made that you love or may be off-season. Reflect over your closet. Set your pieces into these categories; off-season, love, like, hate. These are the categories you should designate your pieces to in order to help you decide what stays & what goes.
Box away "off-season" & "like" pieces
Donate "hate" items
Place your "love" pieces back into your closet
Admit You Made a Purchase Mistake Many of us got caught up in the mindless shopping during COVID in places like, Amazon. Look over your closet: Do you have impulse purchases? Pieces STILL with tags on them? It's OK to admit you made a purchase you later changed your mind on upon receiving but never returned. Does not mean it should stay in your closet as a daily reminder of money wasted ... right?
Has Your Outfit Standard Changed OK, not to hammer it home, but 2020 ...it was a year. I'm not saying that our "standard" of dressing in the future will be "business on top - relax on the bottom." No! I'm NOT saying that. However, I am saying, some of us may have found that our style has changed. I am asking, what is your current style? Does your closet reflect that or accurately represent that?
Hire a Professional I get it, this is easier said than done. Cost combined with COVID. But, there is a reason these professionals have this job - they are good at it! Tackling your closet, filled with emotional purchases and sentimental items is not always an easy task. Having someone come in can provide a lens we cannot see for ourselves. These days, many offer their services virtually to ensure COVID safety regulations. A great resource; Bella V Boutique & Styling.
